Position RequirementsJob Summary:
Interprets as assigned for Limited English Proficiency patients who speak the interpreter’s language(s) of service. Treats all information learned in interpreting encounters as confidential. Avoids conflicts of interest and preferential behavior that would affect the quality and accuracy of interpreting performance. Supports mutually respectful relationships among the three parties involved in interpreting assignments: patient, provider and interpreter. Conducts her or himself during interpretation encounters in accordance with professional standards and ethical principles and protocols as established by Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and the California Standards for Healthcare Interpreters. Faithfully transmits the content, spirit and cultural context of the original message into the target language in order to promote effective communication. Performs excellently in the four basic interpreting roles: message converter; message clarifier; cultural clarifier; and patient advocate. Applies CHW Core Values to the performance of every job duty. These Values include Dignity, Collaboration, Justice, Stewardship, and Excellence.
Requirements :

Education and/or Experience :
High school graduate. Candidate must demonstrate either: (a) one year of employment in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, or (b) at least one year of education in an accredited translation and interpretation program, including medical terminology curricula. Knowledge of current Office of Civil Rights guidance on hospital translation, JCAHO standards and external regulatory requirements a strong asset. Successful completion of courses in medical terminology in English and in languages of service or equivalent.
Licensure or Certification :
Certification in health care interpretation required. If not yet certified, must satisfactorily complete one-year certification course, with certification pending.
Language Skills :
Documented proficiency in English and language/s of service. Ability to compile word lists in English and languages of service, and to record hours on time sheets and on interpreter tracking logs. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from providers, patients, groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Fluency in more than one non-English, high-traffic language, including ability to accurately and successfully interpret in both directions. Ability to sight translate Informed Consent, discharge instructions, hospital policy documents and other medically technical documents from English to languages of service. A high level of proficiency in medical terminology in English and in each authorized service language is required.
